Energy Audit in a Box: How Companies Offer Energy-as-a-Service Built on Shelly Fleet Manager
You’re building an energy management product. The dashboard, the customer portal, maybe optimization logic on top. The part nobody funds and nobody sees is what’s underneath: device connectivity, data ingestion, time-series storage, provisioning, firmware management, fleet health. A two-year infrastructure project before your first paying customer.
Two of our Fleet Manager clients offer energy as a service. One installs solar and battery storage for multi-site businesses under Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and leasing contracts. The other offers homeowners a full package — heat pump, solar panels, and a home battery for a fixed monthly fee over many years. Both sell their own branded platforms. Neither built device infrastructure.
The Challenge
Data you can’t see means a promise you can’t keep
When your revenue depends on delivered savings or a fixed energy bill, you need to know at every moment, at every site — how much energy is produced, stored and consumed, per phase and per circuit. And you need to act remotely: rebalance a system, catch a failing installation before the customer notices, prove performance in a report.
Consumer cloud platforms aren’t built for this. They keep the data the end user cares about summarized. Building your own ingestion and control infrastructure for thousands of meters is a multi-year engineering project neither company wanted.
Different markets, same promise: We guarantee your energy outcome.
You can only guarantee what you can measure and control. Here is how they do it.
The quotation-process energy audit at a glance: one meter’s real data feeding the load profile, the standardized audit procedure (EN 16247 / ASHRAE 211) — data collection, on-site survey, diagnostics, energy balance, measures plan — and a payback-ranked report. Open the interactive dashboard →
The Solution
Shelly Energy Meter devices as the brains, Fleet Manager as the warehouse
Both companies put Shelly energy meters (such as the Pro 3EM) at the heart of every installation. The devices measure consumption and production and act as the local control point of each system.
Every device connects to their own Shelly Fleet Manager instance — their virtual device warehouse. This is where they store, control and monitor the entire fleet:
- Full-granularity data. Fleet Manager captures everything the devices report — every measurement, per phase, per channel, in a time-series database. Raw readings stay at full resolution for 24 hours, then roll up into 15-minute intervals kept under a generous long-term retention policy — not a daily summary: the granularity an energy audit requires.
- Embeddable monitoring. Their customers never see Fleet Manager. Both companies pull data through their API and real-time WebSocket feed into their own branded portals, where clients see live production, consumption and savings per site or across a whole portfolio — and pull reports directly from the database where the historical data is retained.
- Operations at scale. Installers onboard devices in minutes with the Shelly Fleet Manager Assistant (FMA) app. Firmware updates, configuration backups and health alerts run fleet-wide from one dashboard — no site visits.
The Outcome
Energy audit-as-a-Service
The result is a continuous energy audit running across every installation. Anomalies surface as alerts instead of complaints. Support teams diagnose and fix remotely, cutting truck rolls. Performance reports are generated from complete data, not estimates. And scaling from a pilot to a portfolio of thousands of sites means adding devices — not building a platform.
For one client, this powers portfolio-level visibility across commercial sites. For the other, it’s what makes a 15-year fixed-price energy subscription commercially safe to offer.
What Does This Mean for Your Business
If you’re a Shelly reseller or integrator, this model is repeatable: affordable Shelly energy meters as the sensing and control layer, Fleet Manager as your data and operations backbone, and your own product on top.
Time-to-market in weeks instead of years. Zero infrastructure CapEx and every engineering hour goes into the layer customers pay for: your product, your algorithms, your brand.
The competitive details that matter. Unlike consumer clouds that keep summarized end-user data, Fleet Manager retains the granular signal — the raw material for any energy analytics you want to sell on top.
You get an energy audit in a box, and your customers get their energy consumption made visible, at a price point that finally democratizes it. Two production systems already run this way. The next one could be yours — and it doesn’t need a seed round to exist.
Start with a fleet of energy meters. The platform is ready at fleet.shelly.com.
